Design a Vintage Garment with Natural Dyes
In this in-depth 2-day workshop, you will learn all about natural dyeing and the chemistry behind creating permanent color on fabric using locally foraged and homegrown plants. We will cover two main design techniques, bundle dyeing and printing/painting with mordants. You will learn everything from setting up your own studio to preparing your fabric for dye and how to create patterns by directly applying various mordants using printing blocks and brushes. Working with the direct application of various mordants will give you a hands-on understanding of how different mordants react with different plants and how to achieve multiple colors from one plant. You will choose from a carefully curated collection of white vintage garments that you can reimagine using various printing and design techniques. You will also be provided with an organic cotton bandana so that you can learn and explore multiple techniques. You will leave with a one-of-kind garment and scarf, as well as a solid understanding of creating lasting color on fabric with local plants.
